A faulty bonnet switch caused the alarm siren to sound continuously for many minutes until it eventually burnt out. A replacement was sourced from a scrapyard for a few £s. Finding the faulty unit however was rather more difficult. VADIS indicated it was behind the bonnet, no such luck, others suggested under the battery, again not there. Some kind Volvo Forum member suggested inside the off side wheel arch, third time lucky!
Getting at the device is rather a pain as first the plastic inner wheel arch must be removed. Even with this out of the way its position is still fairly hidden. It is located at the top of the wheel arch behind the OS lamp unit and directly above the washer resevoir. The pic below shows its location after its removal:

The siren in its steel frame is secured by two bolts to the rusty bracket and is awkward to remove, I had to move the loom to get access. The unit is shown below in its mounting frame resting on the offside wheel:
The faulty unit was eased out of its frame (it being held by two metal tongues) and unplugged. The replacement unit was then installed. I had no idea if it would work as some siren units are coded to the
alarm. The alarm was set and I triggered it by waving my arm hrough the open window, the siren burst into life, So all was OK. Not the easiest of jobs but at least it was successful
