T5 Gearbox Remote Linkage

While nearing the end of a body raise to sort out the outriggers  I noticed that the  T5 remote gear linkage was quite rusty. Everything had been removed from the chassis to clean and repaint except the engine and gearbox. The remote gear linkage is generally very reliable and consequently is frequently ignored. On removing the linkage I noticed apart from the corrosion some appreciable wear in the universal joint that the gear lever pivots in so decided to replace it and de-rust everything  and paint.
The various components are seen below: The bearing plate that is bolted to the top of the gearbox; the long shaft; a piston that fits in the end of the long shaft and pivots in a rose joint on the engine top and the remote gear lever.

Anti-rattle parts, Universal joint

The rear of the long shaft is bolted to the main gear box stub lever,  the front  has a loose fitting piston that is secured through a rose joint bolted on the rear of the engine. The shaft is thus free to move back and forth and with some sideways movement through the rose joint.   The remote gear lever is bolted to the shaft as seen above and  to prevent rattling the bolt is sleeved by a plastic tube and plastic washers sit beteeen the remote lever and the long shaft, the plastic inner can be seen above as can the edge of one of the plastic washers. A similar arrangement prevents rattling on the main gear lever. The remote lever is secured to its lower bracket by a metalastic bush. The remote gear lever pivots in a universal joint on the steel plate bolted to the gearbox. The bearing is a steel ball within a nylon outer as seen above  and is fixed to the bearing plate by a circlip.
Unless the body is off the chassis this refurbishment would be most awkward, easy enough to dismantle the linkage but trying to assemble the anti-rattle sleeve and washers would be a pain, although my body was off the chassis there was only about 16" clearance so trying to manouvre everything in position was frustrating. The remote gear lever can be bolted to the shaft on the bench but fixing the shaft onto the stub gear lever proved impossible until I glued the two plastic anti-rattle washers to the shaft inner to prevent them falling out. Before assembly make sure that the plastic sleeve is an easy fit in the shaft otherwise it can be difficult to locate.
All the parts that wear out are available from Motoclan.
